Multilingual Website Localization: 5 Essential Steps

Website localization goes beyond translation—URL structure, hreflang, CMS workflows, cultural adaptation and LQA all affect global SEO and conversion.

Multilingual Website Localization: 5 Essential Steps

Step 1: Content audit

Inventory translatable strings, CMS pages, assets, legal footers and dynamic templates. Prioritize revenue and compliance pages first.

Step 2: Technical architecture

Choose subdirectories (/en/, /zh/), subdomains or parameters. Subdirectories on one domain are usually best for SEO. Plan RTL support if needed.

Step 3: Translation and cultural adaptation

Localize—not just translate—headlines, CTAs, formats (dates, currency, units) and imagery. Maintain a glossary for product names and trademarked terms.

Step 4: SEO implementation

Implement hreflang, localized meta titles/descriptions, multilingual sitemaps and locale-aware internal linking. Research keywords per market; do not rely on direct translation of English terms.

Step 5: LQA and launch

Run linguistic QA in context: layout expansion, broken links, form validation messages and checkout flows. Monitor Search Console per locale after launch.
